Course Description

Nature and landscape so often seem in the background. At the same time, we recognize that the spaces around us connects us to our past and charts a course for the future. This course explores how the ideas of nature, landscapes around us, influence personal identities, communities, regions, and nations.

Student Learning Outcomes

• Describe how the idea of nature, and attitudes towards it, have shifted over time.
• Articulate how landscapes of all kinds mediates our relationship to the past, present, and future.
• Develop research and writing skills relevant to careers in the humanities, historical interpretation, museum studies, and public history (and basically everything else).

Work Requirements and Grading

Preparation for each class meeting and active participation in the class discussions
